Although we’ve had a few cold mornings here at Westover this year, the weather has remained fairly mild. Some of our sunny afternoons have reached the 50′s and even low 60′s, and that can really heat up the winter fly fishing in Missouri.

Yesterday afternoon the sun was still warm and bright, so I grabbed the dog and a 3wt and went up into the springs. Clouds of tiny insects moved in the breeze and the fish were rising. We had an hour or so to fish and couldn’t help but to waste just a moment or so taking it all in. As the wood ducks flew over head, we caught a couple of fish on midge imitations and broke a big one off.

As the light was fading and the chill was returning to the air and the last of the midge hatch was wrapping up, I unstrung the little rod and thought to myself how wonderful these springs are in the winter and just how fishable they can be to whoever takes the opportunity to fish them.
