2024 Spring at Westover

What’s New at Westover Farms?
April at Westover is going to be an exciting month. The warmer temps and higher water levels
really have the fish biting. Overnight and day fishing trips can be booked at any time. Don’t
forget that your “non fishing” friends can enjoy the hiking trails especially while the spring is
exploding in the Ozarks. Flowers and blooming trees cover the landscape while the wildlife is
moving through the property. Reservations should be made early as a lot of weekends are
filling up and we expect a busy spring season. We hope to see you and your friends soon.

Spring House Completed
We are super excited for the completion of the Spring House. This house is unique because it
can be a 1 bedroom or a 7 bedroom house. The 1 bedroom Spring House is connected to the 6
bedroom Branch. You will just need to let us know how many bedrooms you will need, and we
can help you make the reservation. Look forward to hearing from you soon!

Solar Eclipse
If you are looking for a place to enjoy the next solar eclipse, Westover still has space available. Some of
you are staying the night and others are driving down for the day. The eclipse provides an interesting
opportunity to fish every hatch twice in one day! So, let us know if you would like to come down for the
day or rent one of the rooms for the night.

Jim W. is the winner of a “Free Day” of fishing at Westover Farms. Jim and his family spent the weekend at Westover Farms and the grandchildren caught some nice fish! To enter the contest, just send us your favorite picture of your fun filled day at Westover Farms to enter the contest. We look forward to seeing your next pictures too!!We just had about 3 inches of much needed rain at
Westover Farms. Our waters are finally up and off color. The warm weather is encouraging the trees and flowers to bloom and the bugs to hatch. Spring water levels can force a variety of fishing techniques and flies. When the water is up, woolies, leeches, and egg patterns do well. When the waters are down, try scuds, midges, emergers. Everyone is also talking about the return of the Cicada! I’ve seen many fly patterns that people are tying for the upcoming hatch. This should be an interesting Spring and Summer with the Cicadas. We look forward to hearing from you!

Fly Tying 101

Fly-Tying 101 is going to follow the Fly Fishing 101 classes.  Each month there will be a Fly Fishing 101 class on a Saturday, and then the next day, Sunday, there will be a Fly Tying 101 class.  This fly tying class will go over entomology, and how to present flies properly to the trout.  During this course we will start by sampling aquatic insects, discussing their lifecycle, and observing the way they appear to trout. Next you will learn to tie three different common styles of fly to match what we sampled. Finally, we will head to the stream and fish each of the three styles of flies, presenting each fly in a way that appears most naturally to fish.

The fly-tying class will begin at 8am on Sunday morning and will conclude by 2pm Sunday afternoon.  Lunch will also be provided during this class.

Happy Birthday

Book Club:  Fly Fishing & Leadership – Lessons from the Stream

The virtual book club was a HUGE success.  We will be hosting another session sometime in the near future.  Please check our website for the next session because it will be here before you know it!   Please contact Steve Ehrlich for more information.

Gateway Chapter of Trout Unlimited – Brown Trout & Kid’s Fishing Day

Gateway Chapter of Trout Unlimited planted another set of brown trout eggs throughout the streams at Westover Farms. GTU will be back towards the end of February to retrieve the egg boxes. The brown trout have hatched, swum out of the boxes, and are now in the streams. GTU will leave the orange ribbon up where the egg boxes were planted, but the ribbon is now for reference only. It’s now ok to walk in the orange ribbon areas. We will send out another email within the next week which will fully explain the mission and progress of the brown trout at Westover Farms. The next email will also specify what to do if you see or catch a brown.
